Festive Cheer on a Christmas Break in Benidorm

The name “Benidorm” basically speaks for itself when it comes to sun-kissed, fun-filled beach holidays, and there are few places in Spain that are more loved - not only by the Brits, but by tourists from all over the world. Its fantastic beaches, vast range of family-friendly activities (on and off the water), and excellent apartment accommodation have seen it evolve into a major international summer tourist destination.
But have you ever considered spending Christmas in Benidorm? If the answer’s “no”, we’re here to change your mind - because while Benidorm definitely wears the summer crown of the Costa Blanca, it has just as much appeal for an end-of-year getaway.
So put a sign on your chimney for Santa, say goodbye to damp, dreary weather, and head to warmer climes for a Christmas you’ll never forget!
Costa Blanca Winter Weather (aka What Winter?)
December is winter in Spain as well, but in Benidorm, it’s not winter as you know it at home. The Costa Blanca sees mild conditions which, although obviously not as warm as summer (when the heat can get quite extreme at times), are actually very pleasant. The cooler weather means that you’ll be able to do more and see more without the exhaustion that can accompany higher temperatures. For some people, this time of the year is actually their preferred season to visit for a quieter break, with fewer crowds and a generally calmer vibe.
Temperatures average around 11°C to 17°C in December, but there is still plenty of Costa Blanca’s signature sunshine - about six hours a day. You’ll certainly need some light layers, but usually it’s very comfortable in the daytime and cool to chilly in the evenings, when a jacket is advisable. There may be some occasional showers around during December, but they’re mostly short lived and nothing too heavy or restrictive.
¡Feliz Navidad Benidorm!
Anyone who’s ever visited Spain will know how much the Spanish love Christmas - or Navidad, as it’s called here. (Admit it, you’re already humming that tune in your head, aren’t you…?) And just like everywhere else, Benidorm certainly knows how to celebrate.
The Christmas Square
The entire city is adorned with a spectacle of lights and decorations, starting with the magical centrepiece of the Plaza del Ayuntamiento, situated in front of the Town Hall. The square is even renamed for the festive season to Plaza de la Navidad, and it goes all out to prove its worth! Along with glittering lights, and trees adorned with colourful decorations, there’s an ice-skating rink, live entertainment with music and children’s shows, various Nativity scenes, a market and, of course, an impressive Christmas tree.
The plaza is a fantastic place to come with children at this time of the year, with something happening all times of the day or night. Come for the fun and stay for the atmosphere!
TIP: Speaking of Nativity scenes, there are several intricate, almost life-sized traditional scenes set throughout the city that you can visit, some of which have been brought out to display for decades.
El Porrat Navideño
El Porrat Navideño is the Christmas market that’s set up in Elche Park, selling a huge variety of local food, crafts, souvenirs, mulled wine, clothes, and plenty of festive cheer. It’s open from early December, so why not do all your gift shopping here and save lugging presents from home? The market is also a great place to stock up on all kinds of gourmet delicacies for the season - both to enjoy on your stay and to take home, just to make that holiday feeling last a little longer…
Christmas House
Located in Casa-Museo de l’Hort de Colón, your children will be thrilled with the packed schedule of events, which kicks off in early December. Every day offers a different programme, with puppet and musical shows, magicians, mime artists, singers, dancers, storytellers, and a host of interactive workshops to get involved with. As the big day approaches, there are even exciting sightings of Mr Claus himself!
Concerts
All around the city (day and night) you’ll come across pop-up concerts; with choirs, quartets, solo singers, bands and every kind of musical event you can imagine. There’s something for all ages to enjoy and this fantastic free entertainment really adds to the festive ambience.
If you’re sticking around in Benidorm until after the New Year, you’ll also get a front row seat to the fireworks and other celebrations, including the famous Three Kings parade, on January 6th.
Accommodation
Our Sabesa apartments are the perfect home-from-home to spend the festive season, allowing you the independence and convenience of being able to self-cater when you want to, or go out and eat as you wish. They provide so much more space than staying in a hotel, along with a greater degree of privacy. An apartment stay is a cost-effective option for a few days, a week, or longer, and we often have exclusive deals and special offers.
La Caseta Apartments are always in demand over Christmas, and they’re located in the perfect position to take advantage of the local celebrations and events in the Old Town, which is around 500m away. Just across the road is the lovely L'Aiguera Park, which at Christmas is festively decorated and illuminated by strings of lights through the palms that line the walkways. There’s a large supermarket close by, where you can purchase everything you need to prepare a full Christmas dinner at home, but you’re also within walking distance of plenty of restaurants. (Oh, and the good news is that you can reassure the kids that Santa Claus knows exactly where La Caseta Apartments are located.)
